Addictive Behaviors

Addictive behaviors

(e.g., sex and porn, emotional eating, gambling, etc.)

Similarly to substance use, addictive behaviors are a way to "fill the void" trauma left in our lives. Some of those behaviors can have a serious impact on our daily functioning, relationships, and health. We want to stop hearing warnings and judgements from loved ones, medical staff, teachers, and others, but feel drawn to the same actions because it brings temporary relief. Therapy will focus on framing these behaviors in the context of coping with trauma, rather than something to feel shamed or berated for, by ourselves or others. Together, we'll develop a mindful approach to understanding behaviors by using self-compassion and curiosity. With self-love and respect, we can learn to choose behaviors and actions that align with our values and who we truly are at our core, rather than try to fill a void that can never be filled.
