The Impact of Trauma on Couples and Families

Trauma happens in the relational context and therefore affects us most deeply in connection with our loved ones. It is ironic and sad that we tend to hurt the people we love most with our actions. Seeking the safety and assurance we may never had in relationships can be frightening, because the stakes are so high!
In therapy, we can gain insight about the impact of trauma on our relationships. New communication methods can be taught, building trust and establishing security. Parents and partners learn to understand behaviors in the context of trauma, which can reduce judgment and build connections. Healthy relationships are possible, when we can be honest and vulnerable with our loved ones while committing to work together, as a team.
